1Cognitive Biases and Fallacies

Before we touch a single flask, chemistry asks us to think honestly. Picture two shopkeepers in a Lahore bazaar weighing the same bag of sugar. One reads the scale as it is; the other quietly nudges the pan because he already "knows" his number is right. Their eyes are fine — it is their thinking that tilts the result. Science suffers the same danger, and this unit trains you to catch it.

★ Definition A cognitive bias is the tendency to make decisions or behave illogically because of our values, memory, upbringing, and other personal characteristics — a fixed pattern of thinking built into how our brain works.

★ Definition A logical fallacy is a flaw in the way a claim or argument is built. It sounds convincing at first, but careful reasoning can refute it.

The simplest way to tell them apart: a bias is a fault in the thinker, while a fallacy is a fault in the argument. Memory hook: bias is in your Brain, a fallacy is in your Fight (your argument).

The board lists twelve of these to know by name. Read the table once for the big picture, then use the plain-language column to lock each one in.

5. Redefinition (shifting the standards / moving the goalposts)	Changing the rules for "proof" after they have already been met, so nothing ever counts as enough.	A result meets every agreed test, then a new impossible demand is added.
6. Appeal to tradition	Believing something is right or better just because it has always been done that way.	"We've always stored acid in this old cabinet, so it must be safe."
7. False authority	Accepting a view because a famous person says it — even though the topic is outside their expertise.	A film star's opinion is used to "prove" a chemical is harmless.
8. Failing Occam's razor	Choosing a needlessly complicated explanation when a simpler one fits the evidence just as well. (William of Ockham, 14th century: prefer the simpler of two explanations.)	Inventing three hidden causes when one known reaction already explains the result.
9. Argument from a non-testable hypothesis	Proposing an idea that can never be verified or disproven, so evidence cannot judge it.	"An unseen force changes the result only when no one measures it."
10. Begging the question	Assuming the very thing you are supposed to prove, so the argument goes in a circle.	"This method is best because it is the finest available."
11. Fallacy of exclusion	Leaving out evidence that would weaken or disprove your hypothesis.	Reporting the readings that fit and quietly dropping the ones that don't.
12. Faulty analogy	Assuming that because two things are alike in one way, they must be alike in another.	"Water and mercury are both liquids, so mercury must be safe to drink."

Notice how many of these are really the same instinct wearing different clothes: we want to be right, so we protect our belief instead of testing it. Examiner tip: MCQs love to give you a short scenario and ask "which fallacy is this?" — so practise matching the example, not just memorising the name.

Confirmation bias is the one the board returns to most often, so let us see it as a picture rather than a paragraph.

✗ Exam trap Students often confuse hasty generalization with faulty analogy. Hasty generalization = too few examples of the same thing. Faulty analogy = comparing two different things and assuming they share a property. Read the scenario for which mistake is actually being made.

2Ethical Considerations in Producing and Using Chemicals

Chemistry is powerful, and power always comes with a bill. The same nitrogen chemistry that fills our fields with fertilizer and feeds millions can, handled carelessly, poison a river. So every chemical decision carries an ethical weight: who benefits, who is put at risk, and who is responsible? The board groups these considerations under three headings, and for each it wants both the good side (pros) and the cost side (cons).

Think of it like the electricity in your home. WAPDA's supply runs your fan and charges your phone — a real benefit — but a frayed wire can burn the house down. We don't ban electricity; we manage it with rules, insulation, and trained people. Chemical substances need exactly the same balanced handling.

2.1 Impact on human health and the environment

Chemical substances bring medical advances, better crops, and the everyday products that raise our quality of life. But the same substances can harm the very people and places they are meant to serve.

✓ Pros

Medicines treat and cure diseases.
Fertilizers raise food production.
Clean-energy technologies cut the carbon footprint.

✗ Cons

Exposure to harmful chemicals can cause cancer, breathing problems, and other illness — a real risk for factory workers and the public.
Careless disposal or accidental release pollutes air, water, and soil.

2.2 Responsibility of scientists and companies

Scientists and companies can lead by example, putting safety and sustainability first — or they can look away when it costs them.

✓ Pros

Adopting corporate social responsibility improves reputation and public trust.
Practices that reduce environmental impact also protect community health.

✗ Cons

Money pressure can tempt firms to put profit ahead of safety — leading to harmful practices and cover-ups.
When pollution is slow or spread out, it is hard to prove who is responsible.

2.3 Role of regulations and laws

Laws set safety standards, control emissions, and require proper handling and disposal — they are the referee that keeps the game fair.

✓ Pros

Regulations push industry toward best practices and safer, more sustainable processes.
Clear standards can spark innovation in cleaner chemistry.

✗ Cons

Weak or outdated rules leave people and ecosystems exposed to current risks.
Very strict rules add compliance costs that can slow innovation and hurt smaller firms.

Memory hook: three areas, three "R"s — the Result on health/environment, the Responsibility of people and firms, and the Rules (regulations). If a long question asks for ethics, answer all three, and always give a pro and a con.

✗ Exam trap A one-sided answer loses marks. If you only write that chemicals are useful, or only that they are dangerous, you have answered half the question. The examiner is testing balance — always pair every benefit with its cost.

3Deconstructing a Scientific Argument

Whether it is a speech at a seminar, a newspaper article, or a glossy advertisement brochure, a good argument is built from the same six parts. Learn to name them and you can take any argument apart — and build your own that holds up. Think of it like a cricket innings: the premises are the runs you put on the board, the claim is the total you are defending, the counterclaim is the opposition chasing it, the rebuttal is your bowler striking back, and the conclusion is the final result.

★ Definition A claim is a statement or position that is the main point of an argument — what the speaker or writer is trying to prove.

★ Definition A counterclaim is a statement that opposes the main claim — an opposing viewpoint or objection.

★ Definition A rebuttal answers a counterclaim, offering proof or reasoning to weaken or disprove it.

★ Definition Premises are the statements or reasons that support the claim and lead to the conclusion.

★ Definition A conclusion is the final statement that follows naturally from the premises — the goal of the argument.

★ Definition Assumptions are the basic beliefs accepted without proof. They quietly support the reasoning but are not stated directly.

Applying it across formats

The same skeleton appears in a speech, a written article, and a brochure — only the wrapping changes.

Memory hook: to take any argument apart, ask in order — "What are they claiming? Why (premises)? Who disagrees (counterclaim)? How do they answer back (rebuttal)? So what (conclusion)? What are they taking for granted (assumptions)?"

4Worked Examples

These model the exact question types in your exercise: name-the-fallacy, spot-the-bias, and take-the-argument-apart.

Worked Example 1 — Name the fallacy

A shopkeeper insists: "We have always stored this acid in the wooden cupboard, so it must be perfectly safe." Which fallacy is this, and why?

Read the reasoning: the only support offered is that it has "always" been done this way.

Match to the list: no evidence of actual safety is given — the claim rests purely on long habit.

∴ Answer: This is the appeal to tradition fallacy — treating "we've always done it" as proof of safety. Correct reasoning would test the cupboard against the acid's real properties.

Worked Example 2 — Spot the bias

A researcher believes a new catalyst always speeds up her reaction. She records the 8 trials where it worked and leaves out the 3 where it did nothing. Name the bias and the fallacy at work.

The thinking fault (bias): she notices only what agrees with her belief — that is confirmation bias.

The argument fault (fallacy): deliberately dropping the 3 failed trials leaves out disproving evidence — the fallacy of exclusion.

∴ Answer: Confirmation bias (in her thinking) leading to the fallacy of exclusion (in her reported results). Honest science reports all trials, including the failures.

Worked Example 3 — Take the argument apart

"Cities have dangerous air pollution, and electric cars release no exhaust, so switching to electric cars would clean our air. Some say batteries are dirty to make — but recycling has cut that impact sharply. We should therefore promote electric cars." Label the claim, premises, counterclaim, rebuttal, and conclusion.

Premises: "Cities have dangerous air pollution"; "electric cars release no exhaust."

Claim: "Switching to electric cars would clean our air."

Counterclaim: "Batteries are dirty to make."

Rebuttal: "Recycling has cut that impact sharply."

∴ Answer / Conclusion: "We should therefore promote electric cars." All five labelled parts are stated in the passage; the sixth part — an assumption — is left unstated: that cleaner city air is a shared, worthwhile goal.

Worked Example 4 — Balanced ethics answer

"Evaluate the use of pesticides in agriculture." Show how to earn full marks.

Benefit (pro): pesticides raise crop yields, which matters for feeding a growing population.

Risk to health (con): exposure to toxic pesticides can harm farm workers and consumers.

Risk to environment (con): run-off contaminates water bodies and harms non-target species.

∴ Answer: Pesticides bring a clear benefit (higher yields) but carry real health and environmental costs — so their use must be balanced with safe handling and regulation. Naming a pro and cons is what secures the marks.
