Part A · Multiple Choice Questions 12 Marks

Part B · Short Questions 3 Marks Each

In the board paper these are Sections B and C: eight parts are offered in Section B (attempt any six) and seven in Section C (attempt any five), each worth 3 marks — 33 marks in total. In the board paper this is Section D: three extended-response questions are offered and any two are attempted, 10 marks each. Read all three before choosing. Answer in parts, label each part (a) and (b), and give a diagram wherever the question allows one.

(a)Define alchemy and state its three aims.4

(b)Explain, giving at least four reasons, why alchemy failed as a science. Then state clearly what chemistry nevertheless inherited from the alchemists.6

(a)Draw a labelled diagram of a distillation set-up of the kind developed by the alchemists. Label the retort, the neck, the receiver and the heat source.5

(b)Describe what happens to the substance at each stage of the process, and explain why distillation is still used in laboratories and in industry today.5

(a)Write the steps of the scientific method in order and explain each one in a single sentence.5

(b)Explain the difference between a theory and a law, giving one example of each from this unit. Then explain why the arrival of the balance in the laboratory is said to be the moment chemistry became a science.5

Part D · Board Marking Pattern Theory 65 Marks

This is how the real FBISE Chemistry SSC-II paper is built and marked. Sections B and C are both short-response; they are kept separate so that examiner panels can mark them independently and so that the chapters are spread across the paper.
